The Solway Whaler project
This project was born in 2019 when I had the idea of a boat that could be used on local waters for exercise & leisure, with older persons.
In my youth, in Essex, I was involved with the Sea Scouts who had some ex Admiralty whalers built of wood. I helped repair these & enjoyed some great times rowing & sailing these boats with other boys from Essex.
The idea of a community boat sponsored by my small business BOATSUTOW has not been forgotten. The pandemic has held up the building of it due to no social contact.
The whole idea was based around the idea of friendship & fellowship afloat & ashore. Older persons sometimes suffer from loneliness. The idea of a 50 plus team of volunteers building a boat & then using it for moderate adventures is still alive though. Jollies down the river or loch with a picnic & a bit of exercise.
As we hopefully come out of this pandemic let us look forward to happier times together. The Solway whaler was designed for me by Naval Architect Paul Fisher of Selway Fisher boat designs in 2019. The boat is to be built of marine plywood with inbuilt buoyancy making it unsinkable.
Volunteers are required to help build the boat after lockdown. Propelled by single canoe paddles or oars with a small outboard that can be used if required. The design requests called for a stable boat that could carry 8 adults.
Remember age is a state of mind sprinkled with the odd physical hick-up.
You can help keep it at bay by enjoying yourself with others in fellowship.
